This wikiHow teaches you how to add an outline to a Google Docs file using the Google Docs app for iPhone and iPad. Outlines are useful for helping you structure your document and navigate it easily quickly.

   Select the Google Docs file you want to add an outline to. Tap the Google Docs file from the list of Google Documents associated with your account.

   • You can also tap the red "＋" plus sign and then the red pencil icon in the bottom-right corner to start a new blank document.

   Tap ⋯ . It's the icon with three dots in the top-right corner.

   Tap Document outline . This opens the outline of your document. If you already have some content on the pages you might already have some headings listed here.

   • The outline will say "No headings yet" if your document doesn't have any headings.

   Tap ✕ . This exits the outline and displays your document fullscreen.

   Tap . It's the blue pencil icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. This allows you to edit the document.

   Select the text you want to make a heading. You can write a heading from scratch or select some text that's already on the page. To select the text:

   • Long-press on the text.
   • Tap Select.
   • Drag the blue dots to highlight the selection.

   Tap the "Format" icon. It's the icon of a letter "A" with four small lines next to it located at the top-right of the screen. This opens a pop-up menu from the bottom of the screen.

   Tap Style and select a heading style. You can choose from any of the heading styles listed. Once selected, this will automatically add the text as a heading to the document outline.

   • Repeat this process for as many headings as you want to add.

    Navigate your outline. Once you've added all the headings to your document, you can return to your document outline (tap ⋯ and select "Document outline") and tap any of the headlines to go directly to that section of your document.

    • If you want to remove a heading from the outline, tap ⋯ next to a headline and select Remove from outline.
